“Macedonia of Yesterday and Tomorrow: Journey in Time”
BOSTON. Aiming to highlight and promote Macedonia in the American public, the Pan-Macedonian Association of the USA, in the context of the organization’s 69th Annual Conference, has invited Dr. Lina Mendoni, archaeologist and researcher at the National Research Foundation and former General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, to offer lectures in Boston and New York on the topic of “Macedonia Yesterday and Tomorrow: A Journey in Time”.
The lectures will be presented in English and will be open to the public. The first will take place Thursday, June 25, 2015, at 7.00 pm in the Auditorium of the Boston University Photonics Center (8 St Mary’s St, Boston, MA 02215). The second is organized in cooperation with the Federation of Greek Teachers of America, the World Council of Cretans, and the Hellenic American National Council, on Friday, June 26, 2015, at 7.00 pm, at the Petros G. Patrides Cultural Center, St. Demetrios Cathedral, Astoria, NY.
“Our aim is to continue cultural and tourist promotion of Macedonia in America and to provide the historical documentation to support further development in the region,” says the President of the Pan-Macedonian Association, USA.
Dr. Mendoni in her speech will discuss, among other topics, the 270 or so new archaeological sites uncovered and 250 cultural projects implemented in the three administrative regions of Macedonia in the past decade. Basic conditions have been created for the protection and promotion of important archaeological sites and monuments of all historical periods, from prehistoric settlements, to cities of classical antiquity, the leading cities of the Macedonian kingdom and the Roman Empire, as well as the unique monuments of Byzantine period.
Dr. Medoni will suggest that cultural monuments can be a key driver for economic prosperity and development. “The cultural heritage of Greece and especially of Macedonia,” says Dr. Mendoni, “enable us to promote development in the field of cultural tourism as well as facilitating the regeneration of urban centers and revitalization of remote mountain regions by helping to stimulate the labor market and to eliminate socioeconomic inequalities.”

«Η Μακεδονία του Χθες και του Αύριο: Οδοιπορικό στον Χρόνο»
ΒΟΣΤΩΝΗ. Με στόχο την ανάδειξη και προβολή της Μακεδονίας στο Αμερικανικό κοινό, η Παμμακεδονική Ένωση των Η.Π.Α., στο πλαίσιο του 69ου Ετήσιου Συνεδρίου της, έχει προσκαλέσει την Αρχαιολόγο Ερευνήτρια στο Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ερευνών και πρώην Γενική Γραμματέα του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού και Αθλητισμού Δρ. Λίνα Μενδώνη να πραγματοποιήσει διαλέξεις στη Βοστώνη και στη Νέα Υόρκη με θέμα «Η Μακεδονία του Χθες και του Αύριο: Οδοιπορικό στον Χρόνο».
Οι διαλέξεις θα πραγματοποιηθούν στην αγγλική γλώσσα και θα είναι ανοιχτές στο κοινό. Η πρώτη θα λάβει χώρα την Πέμπτη 25 Ιουνίου 2015, στις 7.00 μ.μ. στο Αμφιθέατρο του Boston University Photonics Center (8 St Marys St, Boston, MA 02215
). Η δεύτερη διοργανώνεται σε συνεργασία με την Ομοσπονδία Ελλήνων Εκπαιδευτικών Αμερικής, το Παγκόσμιο Συμβούλιο Κρητών και το Ελληνοαμερικανικό Εθνικό Συμβούλιο την Παρασκευή 26 Ιουνίου 2015 στις 7.00 μ.μ., στην πολιτιστική αίθουσα «Πέτρος Γ. Πατρίδης» της κοινότητας του Αγίου Δημητρίου στην Αστόρια.
«Σκοπός μας είναι να συνεχίσουμε την πολιτιστική και τουριστική προβολή της Μακεδονίας στην Αμερική και μαζί με την ιστορική τεκμηρίωση να υποστηρίξουμε την περαιτέρω αναπτυξιακή προσπάθεια στην περιοχή» λέει ο πρόεδρος της Παμμακεδονικής Ένωσης Η.Π.Α.
Η Δρ. Μενδώνη στην ομιλία της θα αναφερθεί, μεταξύ άλλων, στους 270 περίπου νέους αρχαιολογικούς χώρους που αποκαλύφθηκαν και στα 250 έργα Πολιτισμού που υλοποιήθηκαν και στις τρεις διοικητικές Περιφέρειες της Μακεδονίας την τελευταία δεκαετία. Έχουν ήδη δημιουργηθεί βασικές προϋποθέσεις για την προστασία, ανάδειξη και προβολή σημαντικών αρχαιολογικών χώρων και μνημείων όλων των ιστορικών περιόδων, από προϊστορικούς οικισμούς, πόλεις της κλασικής αρχαιότητας, τις εξέχουσες πόλεις του μακεδονικού βασιλείου και της ρωμαϊκής αυτοκρατορίας, καθώς και μοναδικά μνημεία της χιλιόχρονης βυζαντινής περιόδου.
Η αρχαιολόγος θα υποστηρίξει ότι ο Πολιτισμός κάθε τόπου μπορεί να αποτελέσει βασικό μοχλό οικονομικής ευημερίας και ανάπτυξης. «Το πολιτιστικό απόθεμα της Ελλάδας και ειδικότερα της Μακεδονίας», λέει η Δρ. Μενδώνη, «προσφέρεται για την προώθηση αναπτυξιακών πρωτοβουλιών στον τομέα του πολιτιστικού τουρισμού σε συνδυασμό με την ανάπλαση των αστικών κέντρων και την αναζωογόνηση απομακρυσμένων ορεινών περιοχών συμβάλλοντας στην τόνωση της αγοράς εργασίας και στην εξάλειψη των οικονομικοκοινωνικών ανισοτήτων».

Dr Lina G. Mendoni
Archaeologist – Senior Researcher in the National Hellenic Research Foundation
L.G. Mendoni was born in Athens in 1960. She graduated from the Arsakeion Phychikou in 1977, from the Department of Classics of the University of Athens in 1981, and from the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens in 1984. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Athens in 1988. She has worked in archaeological research projects and excavations of the University of Athens and of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Since 1987 is the director of a multi-scientific team for the archaeological research in Kea, Cyclades. Since 1989 is a senior researcher at Institute of Historian Studies in the National Hellenic Research Foundation. During 1995-1998, she is the director or the scientific project “History of the Landscape and Local Histories. From the Natural Environment to the Cultural Landscape”. She is member of the German Archaeological Institute and of many scientific societies and institutions.
During 1994-1999, she is a scientific consultant in the Hellenic Ministry of Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works and in the Ministry of the Aegean.
From March 1999 till March 2004 and from November 2009 till February 2015, L.G. Mendoni is detached as Secretary General to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports.
She has received the Commendatore (II Clase), Ordine della Stella della Solidarieta΄Italiana of the Italian Democracy.
