MWRD Board elects Spyropoulos Chair of Finance

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) Commissioners unanimously elected Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos as Chairman of Finance during the first Board meeting of the new year on January 3, 2013.

 

In addition to Chairman of Finance, Commissioner Spyropoulos will serve as Chair of the Judiciary Committee and the Real Estate Committee. She also will have a seat on the Boards of the District Retirement Fund, Deferred Compensation Board and Other Post Employment Benefits (OPEB).

 

 

Commissioner Spyropoulos was elected to the Board in 2010 coming in first in a field of nine candidates in the county wide election. She served as Budget Chair for the last 2 years as well as Chair of the Municipalities Committee and Monitoring and Research Committee.

 

 

Her focus has been public policy striving to improve the water environment and good government. One of her earliest achievements was to introduce live streaming of Board meetings. Currently, Board meetings are available on line at www.mwrd.org as well as past meetings. Commissioner Spyropoulos said, “I am truly honored and humbled to have the faith and confidence of my colleagues to do this important job. I will continue to work in the best interest of the citizens of Cook County for the environment and good government.”

 

 

Commissioner Spyropoulos is an attorney. She earned her law degree from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago and her Masters in Business Administration from Loyola University Chicago. She has practiced as an attorney since 1997, as an assistant state’s attorney, hearing officer and in private practice. She brings a unique legal and business perspective to the MWRD.

 

 

The MWRD is the agency that manages 1.5 billion gallons of waster water per day serving all 883 square miles of Cook County as well as manages storm water for the county. The agency has over a $1 billion budget to operate.
