Thanks for reading Hellenic News of America

Milkmaid and Pail

Many years ago, a family lived in a small village in Macedonia. The father was a farmer and had several cows. Early one morning, he sent his young daughter to the pen to milk the cows and take the milk to the village square to sell it. Obeying her father, the beautiful girl, finished her milking in a few hours and prepared to return home before she went to the market. She put the milk in a pail, balanced it on her head, and as she walked toward her house, she filled her mind with plans about what she would do with the money she would get for the milk. “I will put this rich milk into our wooden barrel hanging in our basement and shake it hard for a few hours. Then, I will get a fair amount of creamy butter. I will sell the butter on the market and with the money I get for it, I will ask my dad, to let me buy a lot of eggs for hatching. In our chicken coop, the hens we have will sit on the eggs and hatch them and the yard will be filled with a bunch of fine young chicks. Later, I will sell them all and get more money. With that money, I will buy a lovely new and beautiful dress to wear to the village fair. The girls will be jealous. The boys will look at me and everyone will come up to me and ask me for a date.  But, with a toss of my head, I will send them about their business.” As she thought all this and tossed her head backwards in a scornful way, the pail fell to the ground and all the milk was spilt. As the milk flowed out, with it vanished the butter, the eggs, the chicks, the new dress, and all the milkmaid’s pride. Entering the house, on the doorsteps, she met her mother and told her everything that had happened to her. “Oh, my child,” said her mother, “You rushed, and counted your chickens before they were hatched.”

Do not celebrate until you are absolutely sure there is a reason to do so.

Don’t make clothes for a not yet born baby!

Do not count your chickens before they are hatched.

Pride comes before a fall.

There’s many a slip ‘twixt cup and lip.
