Ελιά
Ελιά καλή, μακαριστή, την ηλιογεννημένη,
της Αθηνάς το χάρισμα στην πόλη της Αθήνας,
την χαιρετώ με σεβασμό και την καλωσορίζω,
στης Ολυμπίας τον γνωστό κι ευλογημένο τόπο!
Σαν αιωνόβια να ζει, Χάρο να μη γνωρίζει,
ολοχρονίς να δέχονται φιλήματα του Ήλιου
φύλλα τα χρυσοπράσινα, κλαδιά τα φουντωμένα,
κι ένα κλαδί να κόβεται, δύο να ξεφυτρώνουν.
Να καρτερεί την άνοιξη, τ’ όμορφο καλοκαίρι,
στης αύρας τ’ αγκαλιάσματα με άνθη να γεμίσει,
εργατικές τις μέλισσες σε δείπνο να καλέσει,
καρπό να δέσει διαλεχτό και να τον ωριμάσει.
Με τον καιρό κι αγουρωπές ελιές οι γυαλισμένες
το χρώμα τους ν’ αλλάξουνε, να γίνουν μαυρομάτες,
σαν Αθηνάς τα λαμπερά τα μάτια τα μεγάλα,
με λάδι να γιομίσουνε, Ελιάς το θείο δάκρυ!
Των αθλητών καλλίγραμμα κορμιά δυναμωμένα,
καθημερνά ν’ αλλάζουνε τον ίδρωτα παλαίστρας
με της Ελιάς το βάλσαμο, το βλογημένο λάδι,
κι ανάπαψη να δέχονται γιγαντωμένων κόπων.
Από της ιερής Ελιάς τα νεαρά βλαστάρια,
με προσοχή να κόβονται κλαδιά καλοπλεγμένα,
στεφάνια περιμάχητα του κότινου να κάνουν,
για κεφαλές αθλητικές με νίκη τιμημένες!
Olivetree
Olive tree, beloved, good giver of olives,
Athena’s great gift to the city of Athens
I offer my welcome, and greet her with respect,
Here in Olympia, the famous land so blessed!
May she live forever, Charon never know,
Eternally accepting the Sun’s kiss from below,
Upon her leaves, silver-green and all ablaze with light,
Then give one branch or two when the spring arrives.
May she endure ‘til spring, then summer warm and free,
To be filled with blossoms and embraced by the breeze,
To invite to dinner all those hard working bees
To fertilize her fruit and let it ripen in the heat.
With time, even olives hard and bitter deep inside
Will exchange their color, and become dark-eyed,
Just like Athena’s shining eyes, so dear
As they fill with oil, the Olive’s sacred tear!
The powerful and sculpted bodies of good athletes,
Exchange their daily sweat from the palaestra
With a sweeter balm, the good oil of the olive,
Preparing them again to accept their giant labors.
From the sacred Olive come shoots young and tender
To be cut off with care and woven all together,
Creating those sacred and much-contested wreaths,
That crown the heads of victorious athletes!
Κατάμεστο το στάδιο να δέχεται την στέψη
των αθλητών με ιαχές, ζητωκραυγές μεγάλες,
νέους καλούς και νικητές ωσάν θεούς να βλέπουν,
τον Όλυμπο π’ αφήσανε κι ήρθαν στην Ολυμπία.
Χορός καλός να στήνεται, ν’ ακούγονται κλαρίνα,
νέοι να σέρνουν το χορό και νέες το τραγούδι,
κρασί να τρέχει σα νερό κι από παλιό βαρέλι,
για μια στιγμή ζωή θνητή μ’ αθάνατη να μοιάζει.
Οι Μούσες οι Παρνάσσιες χορεύοντας να φτάνουν,
στον ήχο Απολλώνιας λύρας αρμονισμένης,
από το λάδι της Ελιάς μια στάλα να λαβαίνουν,
το μέτωπο του Ποιητή με σύνεση να χρίσουν!

And a crowd-filled stadium will receive
With shouts and with cheers the crowned athletes,
Young and good victors who will make it seem
Like gods left Olympus for Olympia in a dream.
And as they hear the sound clarinets bring,
The young men will dance as the maidens sing,
And from the old barrel like water will run wine
And just for a moment mortal life will seem divine.
Then Parnassus’ Muses dancing will arrive
In harmony with good Apollo’s lyre,
To receive a drop of the olive’s good oil,
The Poet’s forehead to wisely anoint!
