THERE IS STILL HOPE
This is the message we learned today during our visit to the “Ark of the World” established by Father Antonios in Pogoniani village in Epirus, which is located close to the Greek-Albanian border.
Mrs. Andy Theodorakopoulou, social worker and director of the “Ark” and Mrs. Katerina Martini, social worker and responsible for the organization’s structure, welcomed the representatives of MID ATLANTIC GREEK AMERICAN FOUNDATION and HELLENIC NEWS OF AMERICA:
Pavlos Kotrotsios (president & founder of MAGAF & HNA), Aphrodite Kotrotsios, Demetris Dotis (chief Major Opposition of the City of Pogoni), Vasilis Matsias (City Council Member of Pogoni) Christos Chaligiannis, Spyros Dotis, and Evita Gavras.
After a very thorough tour of the Children’s House, which covers approximately 8,500 square meters, and the other specially designed areas (sleeping rooms, dining room, kitchen, reading rooms, play rooms, utility rooms) which cover approximately 1,200 sq.m., we were informed that the “Ark” functions as a Children’s Protection Center, Agricultural Education Center, Boarding House, and Social Services Center. The “Ark’s” mission is to offer a warm home for children in need of a hug, care and love, while the Agricultural School and the Boarding House give the opportunity to hundreds of children to acquire important skills to build a better life.
The visitors handed food supplies for the “Ark’s” children, promising that they will continue to contribute as much as they can in this gigantic humanitarian inititative undertaken by FATHER ANTONIOS.
Mrs. Theodorakopoulou’s words were heart warming: “We have a twofold vision: firstly, to create a new family for all children of Epirus looking for love and security, and secondly, to give impetus and development in a place which is unfortunately abandoned, and where the Greek element is nearly extinct “.
Mr. Kotrotsios said: “Today’s visit is a revamp for me, having lived and studied in Pogoniani’s High School. Both Mr. Matsias and I, are Pogoniani graduates with many good memories. We are here today after the local representatives and Mrs. Gavras reached out to us, to offer this form of assistance to the “Ark” and its children – our fellow citizens, on behalf of all event participants in the Hellenic Diaspora who created MAGAF together with the newspaper Hellenic News of America and state that we are here to create a new channel of communication with expatriates from Epirus and their friends from all parts of Greece, and see what the future needs of the sensitive region of Epirus are. Let’s all do, at least these holy days, what we can to get closer to our fellow human beings in need. Be strong in your work and good luck! Happy Easter everyone!”

ΚΑΙ ΟΜΩΣ ΥΠΑΡΧΕΙ ΕΛΠΙΔΑΑυτό το μήνυμα αποκομίσαμε σήμερα κατά την επισκεψη μας στην “ΚΙΒΩΤΟ ΤΟΥ ΚΟΣΜΟΥ “ του ΠΑΤΕΡΑ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΥ, στην Πωγωνιανη, ένα χωριό της Ηπείρου ακριβώς στα Ελληνοαλβανικά σύνορα.
Η κα ΑΝΤΥ ΘΕΟΔΩΡΑΚΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ, κοινωνική λειτουργός & διευθύντρια της Κιβωτού και η κα ΚΑΤΕΡΙΝΑ ΜΑΡΤΙΝΗ κοινωνική λειτουργός της δομής, καλωσορίσανε τους εκπροσώπους του MID ATLANTIC GREEK AMERICAN FOUNDATION και της HELLENIC NEWS OF AMERICA:
ΠΑΥΛΟ ΚΟΤΡΟΤΣΙΟ (πρόεδρο & ιδρυτή των MAGAF & ΗΝΑ), ΑΦΡΟΔΙΤΗ ΚΟΤΡΟΤΣΙΟΥ, ΔΗΜΗΤΡΗ ΝΤΟΤΗ (αρχηγό Μείζονος Αντιπολίτευσης Δήμου Πωγωνίου), ΒΑΣΙΛΗ ΜΑΤΣΙΑ (Μελος Δημοτικού Συμβουλίου Δημου Πωγωνίου), ΧΡΗΣΤΟΣ ΧΑΛΙΓΙΑΝΝΗ, ΣΠΥΡΟΣ ΝΤΟΤΗ και την κα ΕΒΙΤΑ ΓΑΒΡΑ.
Έπειτα από μια διεξοδική ξενάγηση στο Σπίτι των παιδιών, που η έκτασή του αγγιζει τα 8.500 τ.μ., και τους ειδικά διαμορφωμένους χώρους (δωμάτια ύπνου, τραπεζαρία, κουζίνα, αναγνωστήρια, play rooms, βοηθητικοί χώροι) 1.200 τ.μ., η Κιβωτός λειτουργεί ως ΚΕΝΤΡΟ ΠΑΙΔΙΚΗΣ ΠΡΟΣΤΑΣΙΑΣ, ΓΕΩΡΓΙΚΗ ΣΧΟΛΗ, ΟΙΚΟΤΡΟΦΕΙΟ και ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΚΗ ΥΠΗΡΕΣΙΑ, με σκοπό ένα ζεστό Σπίτι για παιδιά που έχουν ανάγκη απο μια αγκαλιά, φροντίδα και αγάπη, ενώ η Γεωργική Σχολή και το Οικοτροφείο δινουν την ευκαιρία σε εκατοντάδες παιδιά να αποκτήσουν σημαντικά εφόδια για μια καλύτερη ζωή.
Οι παραπάνω επισκέπτες παρέδοσαν τρόφιμα για τα παιδιά της Κιβωτού, υποσχόμενοι ότι θα συνεχίσουν να συμβάλλουν όσο μπορούν στο γιγάντιο έργο που έχει ξεκινήσει ο ΠΑΤΕΡΑΣ ΑΝΤΩΝΙΟΣ .
Τα λόγια της κας Θεοδωρακοπούλου ήταν αφοπλιστικά: “Το όραμά μας διπλό: αφενός να δημιουργήσουμε μια καινούρια οικογένεια για όλα τα παιδιά της Ηπείρου που αναζητούν την αγάπη και την ασφάλεια, αφετέρου να δώσουμε πνοή και ανάπτυξη σε έναν τόπο που δυστυχώς ερημώνει και που το ελληνικό στοιχείο κοντεύει να εκλείψει”.
Ο κ. Κοτρότσιος από την πλευρά του δήλωσε: «Η σημερινή επίσκεψη είναι ενα αναβάπτισμα για μένα που έζησα και φοίτησα στο Γυμνάσιο Πωγωνιανής. Και εγώ και ο κ. Μάτσιας είμαστε απόφοιτοι με πολλές καλές αναμνήσεις. Είμαστε σήμερα εδώ μετα απο τις επαφές των εδώ αντιπροσώπων και τις ενέργειες της κ. Γαβρά για να προσφέρουμε αυτή την μορφή βοήθειας στην ΚΙΒΩΤΟ και στα ορφανά παιδιά – συμπολίτες μας, εκ μέρους όλων των συμμετεχόντων στις εκδηλώσεις της Ομογένειας που δημιούργησε το MAGAF και η εφημερίδα Hellenic News of America και να δώσουμε το παρών, δημιουργόντας ενα νέο δίαυλο επικοινωνίας με τους απόδημους Ηπειρώτες και φίλους αυτών απο όλα τα μέρη της Ελλάδας και να δούμε απο κοινού ποιές είναι οι μελλοντικές ανάγκες της ευαίσθητης περιοχής της Ηπείρου. Ας κάνουμε όλοι, τουλάχιστον αυτές τις μέρες, ό,τι μπορούμε για να πλησιάσουμε τους συνανθρώπους μας που έχουν ανάγκη”.
