On September 11, 2024, a memorial service will be held at the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine in honor of the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This solemn event, which will be presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, will begin at 3:00 PM and is open to the public.
The Saint Nicholas Church, which was originally established in 1916, was the only house of worship destroyed during the attacks on September 11, 2001. For years, it served as a beloved spiritual home for the Greek Orthodox community in Lower Manhattan. In the aftermath of the tragedy, plans were set in motion to rebuild the church as a national shrine dedicated to the memory of all those who lost their lives on that fateful day. The new Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine, which now stands as a beacon of light on a hill, was consecrated in 2022, symbolizing hope, resilience, and the enduring spirit of faith.
This year’s memorial service will be held in conjunction with the official 9/11 events of commemoration, underscoring the church’s vital role in the broader remembrance activities. Archbishop Elpidophoros has extended a heartfelt invitation to the faithful of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the wider public to join in this important occasion of prayer and reflection.
All are welcome to attend this meaningful service to honor the memory of the victims and offer prayers for peace.
