Gerald J. Marks, MD, Renowned Colorectal Surgeon, Honored

(Wynnewood, PA – Sept. 16, 2015) – Lankenau Medical Center (LMC), part of Main Line Health (MLH), hosted a legacy celebration at the Academy of Natural Sciences on September 10 to launch the campaign to endow Lankenau Medical Center’s new Colorectal Center of Excellence, while honoring Gerald J. Marks, MD, a world-renowned, pioneering colorectal surgeon, on the occasion of his 90th birthday. As a distinguished surgeon in the field of colorectal surgery, Dr. Marks has pioneered techniques and procedures in colorectal cancer management that have dramatically improved the lives of patients. His contributions to the field have helped influence standards of care across the globe.

The new Colorectal Center of Excellence at Lankenau Medical Center will serve as destination for superior colorectal care and as an epicenter for scientists and clinicians to exchange ideas to solve the most demanding problems in the struggle to prevent, treat, and manage colorectal cancer through active clinical research. John H. Marks, MD, Section Chief of Colorectal Surgery for Lankenau Medical Center and Main Line Health, and son of Dr. Gerald Marks, will serve as the Director of the Center. Following in his father’s footsteps, Dr. John Marks has become an internationally renowned colorectal surgeon. He has revolutionized colorectal surgery with his innovative and minimally invasive sphincter-sparing techniques, which have allowed patients from around the world to undergo curative colorectal cancer surgery without the need for a colostomy bag—greatly improving their quality of life.

Patients travel to Lankenau from all over the world for colorectal surgical care that has been perfected by this father-son team. Their breakthroughs in colorectal cancer management serve as a best practice for their international colleagues, many of whom were in attendance at the celebration, which was held in conjunction with an International Rectal Cancer Conference at LMC earlier that day. The event was attended by physicians from four continents and 15 countries. For instance, Sir Alfred Cuschieri, MD, professor of Surgery, Scuola Sant-Anna, Pisa, Italy and chief scientific advisor to the Institute of Medical Science and Technology (IMSaT), attended along with grateful patients, physician colleagues, protégés and leaders from Lankenau Medical Center and across Main Line Health.
