Cyprus has a serious problem. Not because people don’t care but because it is drowned with political opportunists and institutional corruption.

The AKEL/DYSI – DYSI/AKEL government for the past ten years had created a political mess and if the pact that shares the same mentality wins the 2018 Presidential elections things will continue unchanged and the Republic of Cyprus would no longer exist.

Since Cypriots refuse to stand up for their rights but trust the system, then the only hope for a radical change in Cyprus its for the five smaller parties to join forces and offer the electorate a third political option. If united, they could become a powerful force as an alternative to the status quo. Then one can hope that they will do a better job than the other lot; a big order indeed!

Thanks for reading Hellenic News of America

One year before the elections and the well-sharpened knives are out in full force.

Giorgos Lillikas the leader of Simmahia Politon party did not waste time and he was the first to declare his candidacy for the top job in the land. The Right and Left Wing parties have also joint the frenzy for the Battle of the Chair; each one for themselves! So far, none offer co-operation and unity in the interest of Cyprus but are driven by political dogmatism and self-opportunism.

This is a great opportunity for the five smaller parties to unite and choose a credible candidate for the presidential elections. Yet the leader of Simmahia Politon has jumped the queue and declared his candidacy without consultation with other parties but rather expects them to offer their support so he can try and win the presidential chair. Without their backing and support there is no chance in the world of winning his dream chair.

That’s what’s wrong with Cyprus; political opportunism and self-interests rather than do what is right for the country – they should all be ashamed!

In the last three years there came along three mavericks with free minds that have proven themselves with actions against all odds by upholding the Law of the Land with prosecutions and sending officials and “pillars of Cypriot society” into prison for wrong doing, corruption and thievery. This is unheard of in the history of Cyprus!

People like Odysseas the Auditor General; Clerides, the Attorney General and Fedonas the Mayor of Paphos, they all truly believe in Justice, Rule of Law and turned their backs on the status quo. They have started a Revolution of the Mind and that’s what Cyprus needs and not petty-kommata and petty-leaderships.
