If not enough doctors sign up voluntarily to help the National Health Service (NHS) during the spike in coronavirus infections by this weekend, they will face requisitions on Monday, government spokesman Yiannis Economou said in statements to Alpha TV on Thursday evening.
Economou said the specialties most in demand are pulmonary specialists, pathologists, and general practitioners. “Whatever is necessary to boost NHS during this moment of a great battle, we shall do it at any level possible without concern about the cost,” he said, adding that the main priority is to limit loss of life as much as possible.
He also ruled out any idea of the government relaxing measures ahead of the Christmas holidays, and if additional restrictions are needed for unvaccinated people, they will be considered.
