Economou: PM Mitsotakis’ visit to USA a major political event with international ramifications

“Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ visit to USA was a major political event with an international ramifications,” underlined government spokesperson Yiannis Economou in his briefing to the press on Thursday.

“Rarely does the leader of another country play a leading role for two consecutive days in the United States and the impact of this visit and the positive results exceeded the expectations of even the most optimistic observer,” he added.

In his meeting with the US President Joe Biden, Economou said, Mitsotakis had analysed the extent of the repercussions of the energy crisis and the Greek government’s efforts to keep society on its feet, as well as his initiatives in the context of EU. He also expressed his certainty that revisionism and openly aggressive actions that violate international law will not be tolerated by the international community of democratic states and that the language of hostility, revisionism and imperialistic nostalgia will not prevail.

Mitsotakis also denounced Turkish overflights that violate Greek airspace and reiterated that Greece will not accept trespasses on its sovereignty and sovereign rights, underlining that the last thing NATO needs at this time is another source of instability in the southeastern wing of the Alliance. He asked the members of Congress to bear that in mind when making decisions regarding the supply of defence armaments in the Eastern Mediterranean. He also raised the Cyprus issue, pointing out nobody will accept a two-state solution for Cyprus.

Finally, Economou noted, the prime minister made it clear that Greece will continue to invest in its military forces by announcing that the process for the purchase of a squadron of F-35 fighter jets will be launched before the end of the decade and also that Lockheed Martin has already officially expressed interest in making an investment in the Hellenic Aerospace Industry.
