Eleni Bousis, a member of the Leadership 100 Board of Trustees, hosted the second annual Wings to Cure Gala for the Hippocratic Cancer Research Foundation (HCRF), which she founded and chairs, on Oct. 14. The event attracted more than 600 guests and raised $600,000 at the Hilton Chicago to support innovative cutting-edge cancer research at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

Bousis spoke about her inspiration for creating the foundation. Her friend Jay Michael, a real estate developer, passed away at age 34 of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “In his short life, he touched so many people around the globe,” Bousis said. She acknowledged dignitaries in the audience, including the Minister of Defense for Greece, Panos Kammenos, Metropolitan Nikitas Loulias, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and First Lady Diana Rauner.

Dr. Leonidas Platanias, Director of Lurie Cancer Center, lauded HCRF for its determination to “support research at the center to create important opportunities to translate scientific discoveries into novel therapies, advanced technologies and promising clinical trials.”

The Hippocratic Cancer Research Foundation provides the philanthropic support to fund interdisciplinary research teams at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, empowering their world-class investigators to join forces and address the most urgent questions in the fields of cancer biology and oncology in daring and innovative ways. By investing in research, with an emphasis on translational cancer research, the HCRF accelerates and heightens the impact of scientific discoveries.

The Lurie Cancer Center, one of only 49 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation, is recognized internationally as a leader in innovative research, state-of-the-art cancer care, training and education for the next generation of clinicians and scientists, and community outreach.
