The flyover project in Thessaloniki’s ring road, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, will be presented by the ruling New Democracy (ND) government, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis asserted on Monday.

During a tour of northern Greek projects – including the New museum of Aegae and the reconstructed bridge over Aliakmon River – Mitsotakis stopped in Thessaloniki to attend the signing ceremony for the project, budgeted at 373.2 million euros.

“This project was designed, studied, agreed on and will begin to be constructed by ND’s government, and I believe it is a ND government that will turn it over for use,” the PM said. The flyover, he noted, was innovative both technically and in terms of funding, as it is the first project of this size to be carried out through a Public-Private Partnership. The PPP also utilizes the tool of availability payments (long-term financial obligations by the government).

After the project is completed, he continued, the contractor (AVAX-Mytilineos) will be responsible for the new road’s maintenance for the next 26 years, improving the safety of a road artery that was congested almost from the moment it was designed.

Speaking of other projects in the city, the premier said that Thessaloniki will have a subway and its antiquities in place by the end of 2023 or the start of 2024, and that the currently upgraded bus system of the city bears no relation to what the government saw when it came to power in 2019.
