Julie Ziavras will perform a program of Greek songs accompanied by Kostas Psarros, bouzouki with special guest appearances by Leonidas Tsantiris, violin and Susan Tsantiris, keyboards, specialists in traditional Greek island dance music.
“A stunning vocalist fluent in the Greek musical tradition”, soprano Julie Ziavras presents a program capturing the lyric beauty and expressiveness of classic Greek popular song, ranging from the plaintive to the highly spirited and rhythmic. Accompanying herself on classical guitar, Ms Ziavras will introduce the songs, discussing Greece’s rich musical tradition, spirit and culture, enhancing the experience for a non-Greek speaking audience. The program will include works by renowned Greek songwriters including Hadjidakis, Theodorakis, Tsitsanis, Hiotis, rembetika (Greek blues) and traditional folk songs.
This concert series is set in an outdoor amphitheater created in the ancient Greek style with statues of the Greek philosopher Socrates and the goddess Athena, giving the park a Hellenic ambience. This is a family community event sponsored by the non-profit Athenians’ Society of NY in collaboration with the Athens Square Park Executive Board.
