Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoγan’s claims fell on deaf ears both in the security panel he participated and the bilateral contacts he held in Prague on Thursday, according to Greek sources.

According to the same sources, Erdogan was advised to stop this specific tactic and to follow the path of dialogue based on International Law. The Greek mission was aware that he had asked to speak during the dinner. During his intervention, he appeared negative regarding the EU’s handling of Turkey and he even attacked Greece.

The Greek government pointed out that Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, had no intention of leaving unanswered what the Turkish president said. According to the Greek side, the response of Kyriakos Mitsotakis seems to have surprised Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is used to monologues, and, according to the same sources, that was also reflected in his bewildering press conference.  In some parts of the press conference he threatened Greece with an invasion at night and in other parts he said that he does not question the sovereignty of the Greek islands and that Greece is the one that does not come to the dialogue.

The same sources estimated that Mitsotakis will reply to these statements upon his arrival at the informal summit of the 27 European leaders in Prague, but also later at the press conference.

The Greek government pointed out that Greece’s positions are known and that no one can question Greek sovereignty over the Aegean islands.
