“Each time the Greek prime minister goes abroad we can now be certain that our country, to a greater or lesser extent, will be made stronger. He is an equal and reliable interlucutor in yet another crisis in the Middle East. Kyriakos Mitsotakis exercises a responsible and balanced foreign policy,” government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said in an interview on SKAI television on Sunday.

He contrasted this unfavourably with what had been true under the previous government, led by main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, and said that Greece is becoming stronger diplomatically, defensively and economically, while stressing that this took place following very difficult years and a great many sacrifices. Regarding the problem with high prices, he said the government’s policy was based on three main pillars, namely increasing incomes, targeted one-off support for incomes and inspections in the market.

“From the start of the year until today, when the financial year is still not over, fines of 5.5 million euros have been imposed,” he pointed out, adding that this was the result of government legislation imposing a cap on maximum profit margins and the reinforcement of the relevant state services.

He also commented on the decision to extend heating allowances to those who heat their homes using electricity, noting that they were the only ones excluded from the support packages of recent years, and pointed out that Greece was the first country to tax power producers’ windfall profits and use the money to fund subsidies to citizens and businesses.
Marinakis ruled out any increase in taxes and noted that the government’s economic policy mix had not only led to Greece regaining an investment grade rating but also helped to restore the available income of households to levels seen before 2011.
