Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis received the Global Citizen Award of the Atlantic Council from the CEO of Pfizer, Dr. Albert Bourla.
This is an international Atlantic Council award given to selected personalities, with this year’s awardees also including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and top South Korean film producer Miki Lee.
Dr. Bourla said he was honoured to introduce Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis as he receives the Atlantic Council’s highest award for global citizens and described him as “a visionary champion of a new era of economic prosperity, a leader committed to his country who won the trust of the Greeks. A humble leader, whose re-election has shown that he keeps his political promises, while at the same time he has the respect of world leaders.”
Receiving the award, the prime minister thanked Bourla for his “deeply flattering words” and stressed that “this award belongs most of all to the people of Greece for their resilience and perseverance, and for what they have achieved over the past years.”
“What we have achieved in Greece is to demonstrate that one can actually govern from the political centre. That they can be pro-growth but also fiscally disciplined. That one can be – and let me resonate here the words of my good friend Giorgia Meloni – a true patriot, by being very much focused on strong defence and at the same time protecting our borders, but one can also be socially liberal, focused on delivering high-quality public goods but also reducing inequalities,” Mitsotakis underlined.
The prime minister said that the re-election of his government served as a model for how populism can be defeated, resonating beyond Greece’s borders.
The Greek premier also referred to US-Greek relations, stressing that “Greece is a stable ally of the USA and a pillar of security and stability in a turbulent region.”
