Cypriot sailor Pavlos Kontides made history by securing the silver medal in the ILCA 7 medal race on Wednesday. Finishing second in the race, Kontides maintained his position in the overall rankings, just behind Australia’s Matt Wearn.
Kontides, hailing from Limassol, remains the only Cypriot athlete to have won an Olympic medal. His historic achievement dates back to August 6, 2012, at the London Olympics, where he earned Cyprus its first-ever Olympic medal—a feat he echoed 12 years and one day later.
