Significant changes are taking place in schools, Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said on Monday in an interview with REAL FM.
“We will redesign everything in the schools and the changes will be continuous until the end of the government’s term,” the minister said from Paris, where he was attending a UNESCO conference on digital technology, referring to the government’s overall plan for school education.
In particular, Pierrakakis presented in detail the changes that have already been decided and concern:
a. the recruitment of permanent teachers in order to reduce the number of substitutes for the benefit of the educational process and the students.
b. the use of cell phones in schools with specific rules and penalties.
c. the observance of the rules within the school, with families paying the cost of repair in cases of vandalism of the infrastructure. “The family will pay for every thing their child destroys,” he stressed.Pierrakakis also referred to the extensive renovation programme in school units throughout the country. “There are 12,812 schools and, even though the responsibility belongs to the municipalities, the state cannot remain uninvolved. The interactive blackboard is good, but it cannot work when buildings are collapsing,” he said, clarifying that the details of this initiative will be announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the coming days.
