Education, Religion and Sport Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis emphasised the importance of sports in schools during a sports seminar held on Friday to mark the 11th Greek and European School Sports Day, held at the OAKA Olympic facilities with the participation of thousands of school children, ministers, Olympics and Paralympics medallists and several elite athletes, among others.
“Sports in school means a lot. It means a lot for the balance of our mental health, it means a lot for dealing with the bullying that is happening in our schools, for fighting child obesity and creating balanced citizens,” Pierrakakis said, while promising to support sport in schools with “better school infrastructure, a greater investment in activities.”
Under the banner “We Exercise Together. Give Quality to Life”, Pierrakakis and the ministry’s leadership declared the start of a specially designed series of events that began with an exhibition cycling race.
Apart from the cycling race, the seminar included exhibitions of rhythmic gymnastics by Greece’s winning Olympic team Klelia and Anni Pantazi, a workshop on sports education, history and values, demonstrations by the national cheerleading and boccia teams and a chance to play a number of different sports at the K2 training centre.
