The visit to Ankara and his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan this month was successful in that positive steps were taken, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in an interview published on Sunday.

Speaking to the ‘Macedonia’ newspaper, Mitsotakis said, “The trip to Ankra and the meeting with President Erdogan achieved their aims. Positive steps were made on the three directions of the rapprochement process,” referring to the political dialog, the positive agenda, and the Confidence-Building Measures.

Asked to comment on the election campaign speech Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama held in the Galatsi section of Athens last Sunday, the Greek PM responded, “The government had no reason to ban it. Very simply because the Hellenic Republic has nothing to fear by such an event.”

In terms of North Macedonia’s new president, who referred to her country as ‘Macedonia’, Mitsotakis said, “She did not simply violate the Prespa Agreement, but the constitutional charter of her country.” He added that the country’s accession to the European Union “depends on sincere compliance with the agreements.”

As for the European elections on June 9, the Greek PM said they are critical for Greece in terms of the national representation in the European Parliament, but they are critical for Europe as well. “Abstention and inertia is not just New Democracy’s enemy, but the enemy of democracy itself,” he underlined.
