Greek physics professor Constas Foudas was elected president of the Council of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, for the term 2025-2027, it was announced by the Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry on Saturday.
Foudas is the first Greek to assume the leadership of CERN, the largest European nuclear and particle physics laboratory. His success is due to “the targeted and strategically organized diplomatic mobilization, as well as the scientific standing of the Greek candidate,” one in three candidates, the ministry statement said. He is the first Greek to take the helm at CERN.
CERN was founded 70 years ago, includes 24 member states (Greece was a founding member), employs nearly 2,600 staff and serves over 600 research institutions and universities globally.
Foudas teaches at the University of Ioannina Physics Department (High Energy Physics Group), his alma mater, and holds advanced degrees in physics from Columbia University.
