SAN DIEGO, CA December 29, 2015 – Democratic presidential candidate Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente has officially made Michigan history. Today, he became the first candidate to secure enough signatures via petition to be placed on Michigan’s Democratic Primary ballot.

Michigan initiated a new law in 1972 that ostensibly gave candidates a way to achieve ballot access without being a party insider.  Previously, the only path to the ballot in Michigan was via appointment by the Michigan Secretary of State; a privilege reserved for “brand name” Democrats and Republicans. In the past, Michigan voters could only pick from among the political elite at the national level, which may be one of the reasons the political status quo has been so frustratingly maintained over the years.

Rocky has changed all that. Like another famous “Rocky,” candidate Rocky does not quit.  When Michigan law placed an almost insurmountable hurdle in front of him by requiring the gathering of 12,832 signatures in only seven days, Rocky rose to the challenge. He and his team collected 20,166 signatures and presented them to the MI Secretary of State’s office within the limited time frame allowed.

By December 23rd, the MI Secretary of State’s staff found that De La Fuente had provided 3,647 more valid signatures than were required and recommended to “certify petition as sufficient.” Today that recommendation was approved.

Beyond his tenacity, Rocky brings a fresh perspective to the presidential field on the Democratic side.

Rocky is an extremely successful businessman in multiple industries with vast international experience. He also has been active in party politics, serving as the first Hispanic American Delegate At-Large (what is now known as a Superdelegate) for the State of California at the 1992 Presidential Democratic National Convention. Perhaps most importantly, he does not have to pretend to understand minority issues because he is a minority.

Unlike other traditional candidates, Rocky possesses unique people skills. He is equally at home breaking bread with the residents of a homeless center as he is attending a State Dinner. Rocky is passionate about listening to everyone and providing them the voice in Washington, D.C. that they have been missing.

While the media and Democratic Party have generally ignored Rocky’s candidacy, he has qualified to be on the primary ballots of more states than former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. Rocky hopes to add Ohio and North Carolina to that list today as well. It is time for the Democratic Party, which prides itself on being inclusive, to include its only minority candidate in the debates.
