SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said he is happy and proud to be running in the upcoming elections as a candidate MP in the prefecture of Serres, speaking to people in the northern Greek city on Tuesday evening.

There are four reasons he chose to run from Serres, he added: first is that the region deserves equal opportunities in development, and secondly Syriza pays special emphasis to Macedonia and its prefectures. Thirdly, he added, is that Serres has been affected by unemployment – which has climbed to 35% -, price hikes and overall abandonment.

The fourth and final reason for choosing to run from Serres, he said, is that it is “unfair for the people of Serres that a few ‘others’ want to exploit them to sweep under the carpet a crime that should not be forgotten, the tragedy of Tempi,” he added in reference to the February 28 train collision that killed 57 people. Kostas Karamanlis, the country’s transport minister at the time of the fatal accident, resigned the next day.

The main opposition party leader then spoke of Serres’ political history as the birthplace of New Democracy founder and Greece’s former prime minister Konstantinos Karamanlis: “I honor the conservative voters and I also honor the political family, which has given important things to the country,” he pointed out.

But nepotism, he stressed, “can lead us to situations that are not only deeply conservative and unfair, but also dangerous.”
