The cost of our programme has been estimated at 5.6 billion euros, main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said on Sunday during the press conference in the context of the 86th TIF.

“Those who led the country to the memoranda, those who led the country to default, are now accusing us that our policy may lead the country to the memoranda,” Tsipras said.
“We will tax profiteering in order to give a breathing space to the middle class and the wage earners,” the leader of the main opposition underlined.

Tsipras accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of following a policy according to which he is taking money from the citizens in order to subsidize profiteering. SYRIZA on the other hand will tax profiteering, he stressed.

He argued that unless a bold radical programme to strengthen the middle class and the underprivileged is implemented, the cost to society will be disproportionate over the next four years.

Tsipras admitted that SYRIZA may have wronged the middle class, but not out of a conscious choice. “We had to meet the national goal of getting the country out of the memoranda,” he said, noting that today SYRIZA has the obligation to restore any injustices that have occurred in the framework of this national goal.

Regarding the issue of wiretapping, he said that “both I and the opposition parties are talking about an anti-democratic deviation. In no other country would the prime minister have remained in his position.”

Regarding the issue of public debt management, he said: “We settled the debt issue and left 37 billion euros in public funds.”

Regarding Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s threats, he replied: “We certainly cannot ignore the rhetorical escalation on the part of Erdogan, although it is also true that to some extent this is happening for internal reasons. Although there has always been some tension, this escalation is now unprecedented and we will have to see how this escalation will not be extended.”

Αsked about the changes that have been made in SYRIZA, Tsipras replied: “The changes that have been made in SYRIZA are very big, the process of restructuring and reconstruction was deep. SYRIZA is another party now. By upgrading the process of electing the party leader from the base, by having an important think tank of people next to me, by increasing the participation of women. Women will be represented in the new government to a significant extent.”

In reply to a question raised by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) regarding the rise of the far-right in European countries and if he is worried about such a phenomenon in Greece, he said that there is undoubtedly concern over this issue. Speaking at the European level, he said that the reasons for this development are the dead-end policies, the neoliberal policies that widen inequalities and at the same time the inability of the broader left to provide answers at a political level and to express the anxieties of the large social majority. Speaking about Greece, he underlined that if the SYRIZA party did not exist in Greece, the far-right would have much more momentum throughout the period of the crisis and today.
