Invading Turkish forces in 1974 murdered innocent civilians, raped women and children, and plundered northern Cyprus. They forcibly displaced around 170,000 Greek Cypriots, or a third of the total population of the Republic of Cyprus. Turkish forces have since occupied 36% of Cypriot territory, and the fate of hundreds of missing people remains unknown.
