The results of the meeting of the working group for the evaluation of the candidacies for participation in the “Best Tourism Villages” initiative of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) were announced.
The initiative of WTO was contacted at regional level, a working group was set up consisting of experts and officials of the Ministry of Tourism, which collected and evaluated the applications submitted. Specifically, the application was submitted by the Municipalities of Alexandroupolis, Alonissos, Eastern Samos, Western Samos, Meteora, Lamia, Soufli and Tempi.
The working group, after evaluating the applications and their documentation, unanimously approved the participation in the initiative “Best Tourism Villages” of the Municipalities of Alonissos, Western Samos and Soufli.
It is noted that the specific initiative of WTO has a vision to make tourism a factor of regional development and prosperity, with the mission of strengthening the role of tourism in the development and preservation of villages, in harmony with the natural and cultural environment.
The next step of the process is the submission of the approved candidacies to the special platform of the WHO, in order to proceed with the process of evaluation and promotion of the best tourist villages by the World Tourism Organization within October.
Deputy Minister of Tourism Sofia Zacharaki made the following statement: “The goal of the Ministry is to strengthen Greek participation in events and competitions in Europe and internationally, thus giving more opportunities to promote the special features of our country, but also to highlight the wealth of experience it offers. The possible emergence of a Greek village in the list of the World Tourism Organization is an important opportunity to promote and strengthen the idea of sustainability of destinations that we so desperately need. ”
