Located on the grounds of the Embassy of Greece in Washington, DC, the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of Greece’s greatest statesmen, recently underwent significant restoration thanks to the generous support of the Venizelos Foundation USA and its Greek American donors. The Embassy of Greece is deeply thankful to all of them.
Hailing from the island of Crete, Eleftherios Venizelos was instrumental in shaping modern Greece, which doubled in area and population under his leadership. Created by respected Greek sculptor, Yannis Pappas, the statue was donated by the Greek Parliament and placed on the grounds of the Embassy approximately 15 years ago.
The restoration of the statue, undertaken by artists Antonia Papatzanaki and Vasilis Vasili with the contribution of contractor George Marafatsos, ensures that its historical and cultural significance are preserved, after the inevitable wear and tear of time and climate.
