Honoring Prominent Expatriates at the Acropolis Museum

In a significant event held in the Dimitrios Patermalis hall at the Acropolis Museum, distinguished expatriates were celebrated with a special series of stamps dedicated to prominent figures of the Greek diaspora. This event was organized by the Greek Post (ELTA) and the International Foundation for Greece, a London-based charity.

The issuance of this rare stamp series is exceptional, as it is uncommon for living personalities to be depicted on stamps, both in Greece and internationally. The event’s prestigious venue, named after the esteemed archaeologist and first director of the new museum, highlights the importance of honoring living Greek figures.

The Chairman of the Board of ELTA, Mr. Daniel Benardout, welcomed guests and acknowledged the significant contributions of the honorees. Ms. Aspasia Leventi, the president of the International Foundation for Greece, introduced the distinguished journalist Georgios Archimandritis, who served as the event’s moderator and presented each awardee.

Michael Psaros, a prominent figure in the Greek-American community, was recognized for his exceptional business achievements and extensive philanthropic efforts. As co-founder and CEO of KPS Capital Partners LP, and an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Psaros has played a vital role in initiatives such as the reconstruction of St. Nicholas Church at “Ground Zero” in Manhattan.

Emotional and tearful, Psaros dedicated his award to his grandparents who emigrated from Chios to America. He expressed profound gratitude, emphasizing the values of Hellenism and Orthodoxy passed down through generations. In his remarks, he affirmed his pride in being Greek, stating that the eternal values of Hellenism are fundamental to his identity.

Dean Spanos, owner and president of the Los Angeles Chargers, shared his desire to connect with his roots by planning a family trip to Greece. Reflecting on the Greek values instilled in him by his late parents, he expressed a bittersweet feeling about their absence during this honor. In statements to the Hellenic News of America, he described the contrasting emotions when expatriate sentiments meet the realities of life in Greece.

Dimitris Porphyrios, a noted professor of architecture and urban planning, expressed his gratitude for the recognition and reflected on his connection to Greece. He highlighted the significance of the relationship between individuals and their homeland, drawing parallels to architectural principles that shape urban environments.

Unfortunately, George Miller, an acclaimed producer and director, could not attend due to a necessary surgery. However, he sent a heartfelt video message from Australia, emphasizing how his Greek heritage and ancient stories have profoundly influenced his artistic journey.

The event sparked discussions among attendees about the dynamic relationship between the Greek diaspora and metropolitan Greece. Notable figures, including Father Alex Karloutsos, also attended the event.

Ms. Aspasia Leventi shared insights into the International Foundation for Greece’s cultural initiatives aimed at strengthening ties between Greeks in the diaspora and their homeland.
