Speaking in the city of Arta on Tuesday, opposition PASOK-Movement for Change leader Nikos Androulakis accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the ruling New Democracy party of deliberately “spreading fake news and propaganda” at his party’s expense by insisting on a “teratogenesis” narrative that has been repeatedly denied.

“For Mr Mitsotakis and his communication team, every day is April Fool’s Day,” Androulakis said, adding: “Even though we have made it clear that there is no scenario where we would govern together with [MeRA25 leader Yanis Varoufakis] and the champions of the drachma, he continues to spread fake news, trying to terrorise the citizens.”

He also highlighted the findings of the expert report on the Tempi rail crash, which among others found that the station master on duty had been illegally transferred to the position, contrary to the claims made by senior government ministers Makis Voridis and Adonis Georgiadis.

“Who is it, finally, in New Democracy that is responsible for this partisan favour? The accident at Tempi is etched into our collective memory and the Greek people must learn the absolute truth about Contract 717, and that these people would still be alive today if it had been implemented, and about their illegal actions, which did not permit and safety checks on the trains.”

Regarding the provocations emerging from neighbouring Turkiye, Androulakis called for a European response and noted that countries that continued to sell arms to Turkiye after the elections were effectively complicit. He called for an arms embargo that would show Turkey that no country in Europe will allow the use of weapons against Greece and Cyprus.
