Opposition PASOK-Movement for Change leader Nikos Androulakis was in Brussels on Thursday to attend the preparatory meeting of the Party of European Socialists (PES). Just before the start of the meeting, Androulakis congratulated the new secretary of the Italian Partito Democratico, Elly Schlein, and agreed to meet soon.
He also had brief meetings with the prime minister of Finland Sanna Marin and with the High Representative of EU for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell.
Androulakis stated that this EU Council should not be another lost opportunity. “European leaders have a duty to support a European Sovereignty Fund, which will support the European people with solidarity. For better infrastructure, a stronger social state, an equitable green transition and a competitive production base,” he said.
He also added that Greece should lend support to a programme that will enhance cross-border energy networks so that the whole of Europe moves toward an energy union. “It is contradictory to ask for this at a European level but not to implement it on a national level. An extended network of high interconnectibility should be created in Greece so that the era of green energy, of renewable energy sources does not become a game for a few oligarchs but an opportunity for all Greeks, something that will protect them against possible energy poverty and new inequalities,” he said.
