This year marks a significant and tragic milestone in the history of Cyprus. Fifty years ago, on July 20th, 1974, Turkey illegally invaded Cyprus, a violation of the UN Charter and international law. The 1974 Turkish invasion led to 36% of Cypriot territory falling under de facto Turkish control and forced 200,000 Greek Cypriots to flee their homes. Thousands were killed during the invasion, and more than 1,000 are still missing.

This 50th anniversary is a stark reminder of the ongoing Turkish occupation.

The Federation of Cypriot American Organizations, The International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), in cooperation with the Consulate General of the Republic of Cyprus in New York, AHEPA, and the Cyprus-U.S. Chamber of Commerce, in a united effort, will commemorate the 50th Dark Anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus on Saturday, July 20th, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with a Memorial Service Presided by H.E. Archbishop Elpidophoros of America at St. Nicholas Shrine (Ground Zero).

The photo exhibition following the Memorial Service at 60 Pine Street will recount the devastation of 1974 by featuring exclusive photographs provided by the Cyprus Press and Information Office. The emotional weight of this 50th anniversary will also be palpable with a candlelight vigil from St. Nicholas Shrine to 60 Pine Street. The candlelight vigil is a peaceful protest against the 50 Years of illegal invasion and occupation of Cyprus and a call for international attention and action.

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros, Ambassadors, Community leaders, and U.S. Government Representatives (Congressmen) will join the candlelight vigil and attend the Memorial Program.
