The 36th anniversary of the launch of Athens’ first municipal radio station, Athens 98.4 FM, were celebrated in a special event held at the Technopolis City of Athens amphitheatre on Wednesday.
The station was created at the initiative of the late politician and former Athens mayor Miltiadis Evert. At the event, the Technopolis amphitheatre was renamed the ‘Auditorium Miltiadis Evert ‘ in his honor.
Launched on May 31, 1987, Athens 98.4 FM is housed in the repurposed gasworks industrial plant in central Athens, within the same compound as the Technopolis cultural events space and amphitheatre.
Speaking at the event, Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyiannis noted that “it is truly a great honor that today the Municipality of Athens is giving back to Miltiadis Evert some of the many things he so generously offered us.”
Attending the event were the radio station’s first general director Giannis Tzanetakos, former prime ministers Antonis Samaras and Kostas Karamanlis, and Evert’s daughters Alexia and Ileana.
