Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance sector-head for development, Alexis Charitsis on Wednesday criticised the government’s policy on containing high prices, saying that it could not ensure a decent standard of living for struggling households.

“The Development Ministry’s amendment on the much-bruited household basket, which was tabled today in the Greek parliament, confirms the government is mocking consumers, who now can’t make it through the month,” he said.

“Instead of proceeding with substantial measures that will strike at the core of the high prices, the government prefers to simply observe the prices in specific products. The containment of the unprecedented hike in prices that is sweeping the market is left to the goodwill of the major food chains, while in parallel creates conditions of unfair competition against the smaller enterprises that are already facing the risk of shutting down,” Charitsis underlined.

“At the same time, the government obssessively refuses to implement the only measures that could give a true relief to the citizens. Reduction of VAT on food and of the special tax on fuel and intensification of the checks against profiteering”.

“Households are not assured a decent living by the government’s communication games. A change of policy is demanded immediately, with a progressive government that will take the society out of the impasse that the current government has led us,” concluded Charitsis.
