WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), a co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Hellenic Caucus today released the following statement applauding President Obama’s nomination of Kathleen Ann Doherty for Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus.
“Kathleen Ann Doherty is a career member of the Foreign Service and is well prepared to serve as our next Ambassador to Cyprus. Maintaining a strong relationship with Cyprus is crucial both to US national interest and the region, especially given Turkey’s recent illegal incursion into the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone which resulted in suspension of reunification negotiations. I continue to urge the U.S. to help convince Turkey to remove its ships from the EEZ to enable these talks to resume quickly. I am confident that Ms. Doherty will continue to actively engage in discussions to reunify Cyprus to the benefit of all Cypriots. I congratulate Ms. Doherty on her nomination and urge her quick confirmation.”
