DREXEL HILL, Pa. – Delaware County Memorial Hospital’s joint replacement program recently got a bit of a makeover, and people are taking notice.
The Total Joint Center at DCMH is a patient-centered program that offers excellence in clinical care and patient outcomes for those who need hip or knee replacement surgery. Building on its longstanding reputation for high-quality care, the hospital recently introduced several program enhancements to maximize patient comfort and satisfaction during the hospital stay.
In addition to the latest quad-sparing surgical techniques and evidence-based clinical practices proven to improve patient outcomes and safety, the Total Joint Center now provides the following amenities:
- A patient navigator: The navigator is a point of contact who guides the patient through their entire joint replacement journey.
- One-on-one education: Research has proven that an educated patient experiences better outcomes. DCMH’s program includes one-on-one consultation with a physical therapist who helps the patient understand what to expect on the day of surgery as well as from rehabilitation therapy afterward.
- Upgraded patient rooms: The Total Joint Center’s post-operative patient rooms were recently renovated to include flat screen TVs, new flooring, Wifi access and a pullout bed for guests.
- Personal care toiletries.
- A spoken meal-ordering system.
Patients of the Total Joint Center at DCMH can also expect to get out of bed the day of surgery and to be visited by their orthopedic surgeon in the hospital and for post-operative care. The goal is to discharge patients with home care physical therapy after a two-day hospital stay.
Procedures are performed by the skilled surgeons of Premier Orthopaedics as part of the Premier/Crozer-Keystone Orthopedics Partnership. The program’s unique approach produces excellent patient outcomes and provides personalized care by a coordinated team.
“Patients are recovering quicker and stronger than they were 10 years ago,” says Eugene Elia, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and physician champion for the Total Joint Center at DCMH. “We have been using new techniques such as small-incision surgery and anterior approach hip surgery to accomplish this. Additionally, we avoid cutting the quad tendon in knee replacement surgery. Finally, our dedicated programs just for hip and knee replacement surgery streamline the process from start to finish.
“Getting out of bed and walking on the day of surgery lowers the risk of blood clots and actually aids in the healing process,” says Curt Miller, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and physician champion for the Total Joint Center at DCMH.
“Patients have been reacting well to the facility changes at DCMH,” Elia says, “especially the room makeovers and modern changes. The DCMH joint program has always been on the cutting edge, and these new changes have made a great clinical program even better.”
