Consumption of both electricity and liquid fuels (diesel and petrol) continued to be higher than the previous year in Greece, in spite of the energy crisis and high prices, according to the latest figures for the first seven months of 2022.

This was attributed to the government subsidies to support consumption, which largely offset the higher costs, as well as an increase in tourism that boosted the transport sector and economic activity in general, as well as the lifting of pandemic restrictions that still existed at the start of 2021.

Sources said that purchases of petrol in the first seven months of 2022 were up 6 pct relative to the same period in 2021, while those of diesel were up 9 pct.

This picture was sharply different in July, however, when there was 2 pct increase in consumption of diesel but a 12-13 pct drop in consumption of petrol. This was attributed to the high price of petrol, with prices as high as 2.4 euros per litre (2.6 euros in island areas) combined with the fact that fuel pass disbursements had not yet occurred.
