Foundation is about to complete seven months of activities and continues its mission to help those who have been affected by the economic crisis and recent austerity measures. On July 11th and August 9th, 600 food parcels were distributed to families and individuals currently facing serious financial problems in Greece. 400 packages were distributed from the Meropion Philanthropic foundation in the center of Athens. The remaining packages were distributed in Nikia, Keratsini, Taurus, and Faliro. The distribution and packaging was carried out by volunteers from the Society of Friends of the foundation for the homeless. Board member Stelios Taketzis from New York attended both distributions. Since its inception on January 19 2012, Foundation has provided $40,000 to purchase approximately 2000 packages of food. According to the foundation’s policy, funds are raised in the United States and all goods are purchased in Greece. In addition to providing aid to individuals, this policy also helps to stimulate the local Greek economy. Donations have come from individuals as well as organizations, such as the Greek American Homeowners Association, Philoptochos of Westfield NJ, AHEPA Ramapo 453, Wyckoff and Bergen Knights 285, Tenafly of New Jersey and various others.
On August 21st, a distribution will take place at Tavros with food donated entirely by the Hellenic Federation of Northern California. The president of the Federation Mr. Theodore Laliotis will be present as well. On Sunday, October 5, a concert featuring Grigoris Maninakis and the Mikrokosmos Ensemble will take place at the Chian House in Astoria in support of Foundation. The concert will also feature Makaria Psiliteli, Lina Orfanos and new talents Anna Eliopoulos and Elena Toumaras. All artists are participating pro bono in support of the Foundation.
