Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis sent a message on Sunday in an interview with ‘Real News’ that the government is not going to allow anyone to risk the lives of citizens, their properties, critical infrastructures and the natural environment.
He added that the climate crisis is not an excuse. “It is a new reality to which we must adapt our policy, our operational approach and our firefighting measures,” he underlined adding that funding for the fire season has already been increased, funds of almost 15 million euros have been allocated to the municipalities.
Climatic conditions are “explosive” – the mix of lack of rainfall, scorching temperatures and strong winds is fueling devastating fires. “Our goal is not to let the severity of the phenomenon out of control and to take even more steps forward.”
As for the high prices, he said that this is one of the most important problems the Greek society is facing, explaining that it is an ‘imported’ phenomenon. He stressed that the government has proven over time that in difficult times it stands by the citizens.
