Households, enterprises and farmers in 10 cities in Macedonia will have access to natural gas from mid-2024 when a natural gas pipeline that began construction on Thursday is expected to be completed.

The pipeline will link Alexandria, Naousa, Veria, Pella, Skydra, Edessa, Eordea, Kozani and Amyntaio and at a later stage Kastoria with the natural gas network in western Macedonia.
The pipeline will be the first in Greece and among the first in Europe to be certified for the transportation of 100% hydrogen, creating the preconditions for the development of the hydrogen industry in the region. The pipeline will have a length of 160 km and construction will cost 163 million euros. It will start from Trikala, Imathia prefecture and end in Kardia, Kozani.

Maria Rita Galli, DESFA’s CEO, said the project creates new growth prospects for the regions of Central and Western Macedonia, ensuring their smooth transition to a cleaner energy era and providing natural gas supply to many new points and users in the greater region.
