President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Culture Minister Lina Mendoni on Sunday attended events organised by the Epidaurus Municipality to celebrate the 202nd anniversary of the first Greek National Assembly of 1821-1822.

President Sakellaropoulou attended a service at the Church of Evangelistria and then laid a wreath at a monument in 1st National Assembly Square. In a statement, she remarked:
“Today’s anniversary reminds us of the glorious struggle of the Greeks and the origins of our coexistence…the Constitution of Epidaurus is the founding act of Greek constitutionalism. It reflects the will of the Greeks not only for independence but also for political sovereignty and freedom.”

She concluded by noting that the ‘Provisional Regime of Greece’, along with the declaration of independence, was imbued with the values of the Enlightenment and the major revolutions and that the foundations of the modern Greek State were built on its principles.
