Washington, D.C. – March 8, 2014 – SaveTheArchives.com presented its global initiative to preserve Greece’s migration history at the annual conference of the Hellenic American National Council (HANC) in the nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C.
Established in 1992, HANC is the coordinative umbrella organization of Hellenes and Philhellenes in the United States. With the goal of honoring and protecting the democratic Hellenic ideals and culture, President of HANC, Mr. Paul Kotrotsios, invited SaveTheArchives.com founder, Georgios Stroumboulis, to address the presidents of the Hellenic organizations throughout the United States at the annual conference.
“Having the opportunity to address all the Presidents of Hellenic American organizations at the same time, under one roof was an extremely incredible opportunity” said Stroumboulis. “The feedback and committed support from the council was encouraging and SaveTheArchives.com is fortunate to have the support coming from this powerful group of leaders”.
Other prominent figures present at the conference included former United States Senator, Paul Sarbanes, Ambassador of Greece to the USA, Christos Panagopoulos, and Ambassador of Cyprus to the USA, George Chacalli. Details surrounding HANC’s involvement with the SaveTheArchives.com initiative will be shared in the coming weeks. With awareness growing daily and support coming from the United States, Canada and Australia, SaveTheArchives.com is on track to achieve its financial goal needed to digitize Greece’s migration history.
SaveTheArchives.com was launched over a year ago with the intent to raise €25,000 to help digitize the more than 200,000 entry archives of Greeks who migrated from Greece to the United States, Canada, Australia and Europe. Promoting the importance of preserving this piece of history, SaveTheArchives.com has seen support coming in from around the world and from the diplomatic community. All the entry archives are temporarily housed in the basement of the International Organization for Migration in Athens until SaveTheArchives.com raises the needed funds to protect them through digitization.
