The Permanent Mission of Greece to the United Nations, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation & The New York Times Opinion Section, in cooperation with The New York City Greek Film Festival, will host a screening of the academy award nominated short subject documentary “4.1 Miles” by Daphne Matziaraki at United Nations Headquarters/Trusteeship Chamber on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at 6:30 pm.
From January 2015 to January 2016, over 850,000 refugees crossed from the coast of Turkey to different Greek islands, with the vast majority arriving to the island of Lesvos. 4.1 miles is the distance that refugees had to cross in order to reach Lesvos. “4.1 Miles” documents the efforts of the crew of a Greek Coast Guard vessel to bring to safety hundreds of refuges undertaking this adverse, extremely dangerous and often deadly passage.
Bryan Doerries, Artistic Director & Founder, Theater of War, talks with Director Daphne Matziaraki and Greek coast Guard Captain Kyriakos Papadopoulos after the screening.
Bryan Doerries’ work with Theater of War has been focusing on helping war veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder through the staged reading of specific Greek tragedies. Doerries’ approach utilizes the idea of ritualized catharsis as effective means of helping communities to address collectively traumatic experiences.
Ambassador Catherine Boura, Permanent Representative of Greece to the UN and Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, Representative of the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations, will deliver opening remarks.
