A search and rescue operation for migrants has been underway since midnight in the sea area 38 nautical miles south of Rhodes when a boat with 80 people aboard sank.
Two coast guard vessels, a navy ship, three nearby ships and a SUPER PUMA helicopter are operating in the area.
So far, twenty-nine people have been rescued.
The rescued are all men of various nationalities, including Iraqis and Afghans.
According to their statements, the boat departed from Antalya, Turkey, two days ago with Italy as their final destination. A small number of migrants were wearing life jackets, while the rest were not.
West-northwest winds of 5 to 6 Beaufort are prevailing in the area.
