A large-scale search-and-rescue operation was launched in the sea near Cape Kafireas on Tuesday after the sinking of a boat with an unknown number of migrants on board. A coast guard offshore patrol boat located and collected nine foreign nationals from the rocky island of Mandilos.
According to the initial statements of the rescued migrants, a total of 68 people were on board the sunken boat. Participating in the search and rescue operation are an offshore patrol boat and a helicopter of the Greek coast guard and two vessels sailing in the vicinity.
Weather conditions in the area are unfavourable, with northerly winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort and wind gusts of up to 9 Beaufort.
