Bill Would Bring Annual Photo Requirement for Level-One and –Two Sex Offenders In Line with Level-Three Offenders
ALBANY, N.Y. – Senator Michael Gianaris announced his legislation (S.2477) requiring level-one and level-two sex offenders to appear before law enforcement agencies annually for updated photos passed the Senate. This expands a requirement currently limited to only level-three sex offenders.
“This bill keeps communities safer by providing information parents, neighbors, schools, and law enforcement need,” said Senator Michael Gianaris. “This is common sense legislation, passed unanimously, that will make it easier for many New Yorkers to sleep easy at night.”
Under current law, convicted level-one and level-two sex offenders are required to personally appear in front of a local law enforcement entity every three years for an updated photos. Level-three sex offenders are required to appear annually. By enacting Senator Gianaris’ legislation, it will ensure the information in the sex offender registry is consistently updated.
Senator Gianaris’ legislation is currently awaiting action in the state Assembly.
