The Skiathos-Evia islands power grid connection was officially inaugurated on Monday at the High-Voltage Station that is part of the project on the Sporades island.

The electricity link between the two islands east of the Greek mainland has been in operation since July 11, meeting increased demand on both Skiathos and the rest of the Sporades Islands in general during the high tourism season. As Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) has said, the project was very complicated, including a submarine cable 29km long, an overland tranfer line on Evia 30km long, a new gas insulated substation (GIS) substation on Skiathos, and the upgrade of the existing high-voltage station in Mantoudi on Evia. The contract was signed in May 2020 and the project kept to its timetable despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Inaugurating the project were Secretary General of Energy & Mineral Resources Alexandra Sdoukou and IPTO President and CEO Manos Manousakis. Also attending were Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Christos Triantopoulos, Mayor of Skiathos Theodors Tzoumas, Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator CEO Anastasios Manos, and local officials.
Manousakis thanked the local community that embraced the project from the start and said IPTO will continue its investment program totalling 5 billion euros, leading to Greece’s energy upgrade up to 2030.
