The parish of St. Athanasios in Paramus, New Jersey, celebrated a momentous occasion with the consecration of its sanctuary, presided over by His Eminence, Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey, on the weekend of October 5th and 6th. This significant event was marked by a series of spiritually uplifting services that brought together clergy and parishioners in a demonstration of faith and community.

The celebration commenced on Saturday evening with Vespers and the Entrance of Sacred Relics, a moving ceremony that set the tone for the days ahead. On Sunday morning, the Consecration Service and Hierarchical Divine Liturgy were held, allowing the faithful to partake in this sacred moment.

A special acknowledgment goes to Carol Kourgelis, a generous parishioner who served as the godparent for the Consecration in honor of her late husband, Thomas Kourgelis. Her dedication to the parish and its traditions exemplifies the spirit of service and commitment that is cherished within the community.

The consecration was further honored by the presence of numerous clergy members from the Metropolis and beyond, as well as Archons and many faithful who attended to witness the heartfelt services. The parish also welcomed back its previous two priests, Father Panagiotis Lekkas and Father Anargyros Stavropoulos, alongside its current priest, Father Nikolaos Mataragas. Following the services on Sunday, Father Mataragas was elevated by His Eminence to the esteemed position of Economos, recognizing his contributions to the parish.

After Vespers on Saturday, attendees gathered for a lovely reception in the church’s community center, graciously sponsored by the St. Irene’s Philoptochos Society. The celebrations continued with a delightful gathering after Sunday’s services at Seasons in Washington Township, allowing parishioners to reflect on the significance of the weekend and strengthen their bonds within the community.
