September’s Greek of the Month is Pericles, the great Greek political leader, orator, and general of the 5th century BC.
Between the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, Athens flourished under his rule, becoming a renowned and magnificent city. As a result, the “Golden Age of Pericles” is an alternate title for this period. Pericles was a strong advocate for democracy and his reforms helped establish the foundation for future democratic political systems. His most notable legacy is found in the Golden Age’s literary and artistic creations, many of which have endured to this day. The Parthenon, the eternal symbol of Democracy and masterpiece of architecture, was constructed during this period.
