The new minimum wage, which is increased to 830 euros from 650 euros in 2019, comes into effect on 1 April 2024 and brings up many benefits associated with it. The aim is for the minimum wage to reach 950 euros and the average salary to increase to 1,500 euros by the end of the Cabinet’s term, compared to 1,251 euros in 2023.
The new minimum wage, effective from April 1st, will also benefit workers in the tourism sector, arriving before the start of the tourist season.
“This is a bold increase of 50 euros per month, with which the government fulfills its commitment for better wages for our fellow citizens,” stated the Minister of Labour and Social Security Domna Michailidou, during a press conference on Friday. Michailidou added that with the new significant increase in the minimum wage, the fourth consecutive one since 2019, to be applied from April 1, 2024, three additional wages have been added to workers’ income.
Additionally, the Minister of Labour and Social Security noted that the new increase in the minimum wage is the result of consultation with social and scientific bodies and takes into account the needs of households, the resilience of businesses, and the prospects of the Greek economy while addressing the effects of inflation.
