‘Tis the Season –of Giving, and the congregation of St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church in Jeffersonville, Pennsylvania, truly understands the meaning of Christmas this holiday season. After church on the Sunday before Christmas, the entrance of the church’s Cultural center was surrounded with toy donations for the children of the Ronald McDonald House-Greek Division in New York City. The Ronald McDonald House offers lodging and accommodations to children and families who are receiving medical treatment in the United States from abroad. For over 35 years, there have been over 10,000 Greek families that have come through the doors of the Ronald McDonald House New York-Greek Division, currently located on East 73rd Street in Manhattan. This service has had a profound effect on the lives of those children and their families who are in search of hope.

St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church together with the Hellenic News of America and the Hermes Young Professional’s Initiative, led by Aphrodite Kotrotsios, hosted this year’s Second Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Under the direction of Fr. Peter Thornberg and with help from Mr. Dean Laskaris, President of the Parish Council St. Sophia’s contribution to the Ronald McDonald House was a true success. Fr. Peter Thornburg became the pastor of St. Sophia’s in 2006, and has brought a young and dynamic energy to the community.  Under his spiritual guidance, the community united to move forward with building of the new Byzantine style church and broke ground on March 6, 2011.

We thank St. Sophia’s church for their overwhelming response and contribution to the children of the Ronald McDonald House- Greek Division. It is our hope, at the Hellenic News, that our readers will also make contributions to those less fortunate and in search of hope this Christmas Season.

Thanks for reading Hellenic News of America
